A diamond riviere necklace is a continuation of diamonds that go all the way round. Riviere necklaces  became popular in the Georgian Period (1714-1837) when they were set with paste, topaz, amethyst or diamonds in a closed back setting. In the Victorian period rivieres remained popular and became open backs. The metal used was silver for the setting and gold backing with rose cuts, old mine and old brilliant cuts.
